Dubai: In Certain Buildings, Residents Must Wait up to Thirty Minutes for a Lift

Dubai may have an amazing skyline, but navigating the city’s tall buildings is becoming a major time-waster for many residents and office workers. People are losing thirty minutes or more during peak hours simply waiting for a lift in the increasingly common long elevator lines.

During business hours, long lines at the 25-story Grosvenor Business Tower in Barsha Heights can extend several meters in length. Desperate to reach their floors, dozens of office workers queue up hoping to cram themselves into the next available lift, no matter which way it is going.

To avoid the lines, some office workers have even turned to inventive tactics. A real estate broker said, “I sometimes take the stairs up a few floors and catch the lift from there.” Filipino Tala S revealed her own trick: “People use all kinds of tricks. For instance, even though I don’t own a car, I still go to the basement parking two stories below to catch the elevator.”

Another employee, Anna F, explained how awkward the circumstances can be. She remarked, “It gets hot in there and sweaty and smelly.” “I have to use the loo to freshen up with deodorant by the time I get to my floor, and then I go to my desk.
