Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, banked on a shift in focus from low-cost mass-market cars to robotic vehicles by showcasing a long-awaited robotaxi on Thursday night. The robotaxi has two gull-wing doors and lacks a steering wheel and pedals.
Musk arrived on stage at a lavish reveal in a “Cybercab,” which would be manufactured starting in 2026 and eventually sold in large quantities for less than $30,000.
He then gave a brief overview of the robovan, which can accommodate up to 20 people. However, Musk, who has a history of missing estimates and said that he was generally optimistic about timelines, could not specify how soon Tesla could increase robotaxi production, get over unavoidable regulatory obstacles, or put a business plan into place to outperform robotaxi competitors like Alphabet’s Waymo.
He said to a crowd at the Warner Brothers Studio lot outside of Los Angeles, “You can think of the car in an autonomous world as just a little lounge.” “You are simply sitting in a cosy little lounge, and you are free to do anything you want while you are there. When you leave, you will have arrived at your destination.”
He added that next year, the company plans to start “fully autonomous, unsupervised” driving with its current models in Texas and California before producing what he dubbed the “cyber cab.”
In 2026, so yes, before 2027, but I’m a touch optimistic about timelines. I’ll say it that way. Additionally, Musk displayed a dancing humanoid.
