France has criticised unsubstantiated reports on social media that European politicians, including President Emmanuel Macron, were spotted using drugs on a train, calling them “fake news” and accusing Russia of trying to thwart attempts to bring peace to Ukraine.
In addition to being extensively spread on X by individuals like American radio presenter and conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, the claim was also promoted by Russian authorities, such as Maria Zakharova, the spokesperson for the foreign ministry.
In order to prepare for their Saturday discussions with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky, they posted real video of Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz meeting in a cabin on their train to Kyiv.
Macron can be seen clearing a white tissue from the table as Merz and Starmer enter the chamber. The reports said that the white item contained cocaine without providing any supporting proof. According to photos captured inside the train by AFP and other media, the white thing was a crumpled piece of tissue. Following several French warnings about Russian misinformation tactics in Europe that have intensified amid Moscow’s conflict on Ukraine, the debate has arisen.
