With bunk beds on board, Air New Zealand is introducing a novel method for economy travelers to sleep on lengthy flights. Next month, the airline will begin accepting reservations for its Skynest” seats, which will enable travelers in economy class to rest flat during flights.
These will be on sale on May 18, 2026, with travel starting in November, and they will make their debut on a few ultra-long-haul flights between New York and Auckland. Beds on airplanes are nothing new; nearly all long-haul airlines provide upper-class guests a seat that can be made into a bed.
Although bunk beds were available on flights in various configurations during the early days of air travel, Air New Zealand will introduce a more contemporary strategy that is not exclusive to affluent passengers.
The airline’s new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, which is scheduled to launch in November, will include six lie-flat pods arranged in a bunk-style configuration. With full-length mattresses, bedding, ambient lighting, a privacy curtain, and charging connections, the pods will offer a private area.
These pods will only be available in four-hour intervals, unlike upper classes, so you can take a mid-flight snooze instead of sleeping the whole way. The option to add a four-hour session will be available to customers who reserve economy or premium economy seats.
