The 23-year-old future queen of Belgium, Princess Elisabeth, has just finished her first year at Harvard University. Still, her future education may be in jeopardy due to the US President Donald Trump administration’s restriction on international students attending the university.
In addition to compelling current international students to transfer to other institutions or risk losing their legal status in the US, the Trump administration on Thursday banned Harvard University from accepting international students. It threatened to extend the crackdown to other universities.
Just now, Princess Elisabeth finished her first year. Only in the days and weeks to follow will the ramifications of the Trump administration’s decision become evident. “We are looking into the matter right now,” said Lore Vandoorne, a spokesman for the Belgian Royal Palace.
We will wait for things to settle down while we analyse this. In the days and weeks ahead, a lot may still happen,” Xavier Baert, director of communications at the Palace, remarked.
According to the university’s website, Harvard’s two-year master’s program in public policy, which Elisabeth is enrolled in, broadens students’ perspectives and hones their talents for a “successful career in public service.”
The princess, the oldest of King Philippe and Queen Mathilde’s four children, is the heir apparent to the Belgian throne. She graduated with a degree in politics and history from Oxford University in the United Kingdom prior to enrolling at Harvard. The Trump administration’s action, which impacts thousands of students, was declared unlawful and a form of retribution by Harvard on Thursday.
