
Visitors discovered that the ancient old town of Jeddah, a port on the Red Sea in Saudi Arabia, also drew them in during last month’s Grand Prix, which featured Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton and American singer Jennifer Lopez.
Due to the departure of its merchant elite, Jeddah’s old town had become neglected, and it is now recognised as the kingdom’s new commercial centre. However, revitalising culture has been a part of the kingdom’s ambitious Vision 2030 goal to diversify its economy and reduce its reliance on oil to attract tourists.
The ancient old city of “Al Balad” in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, features a recently refurbished home. Reuters: The slower pace of the reconstructed old Jeddah was a hit with visitors who came for the Formula One event.
The town, known in Arabic as Al Balad, has an impression of bygone eras thanks to its brown and blue wooden buildings in the Arabic style, which reflect the city’s location between the sea and the sand of the Arabian Desert. Since then, the government has expedited efforts to revitalise local businesses in the region and rehabilitate over 650 structures. The 57-year-old barista Fadil Zahir was born in the ancient town.
