In a dramatic reduction of operations at a joint venture facility, Nissan Motor announced on Thursday that it will not accept new orders from the US for two Infiniti SUVs made in Mexico due to auto tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump.
After declaring in January it would terminate one of the two shifts this month, the Japanese automaker announced it would continue to produce the Rogue SUV in two shifts at its Smyrna, Tennessee, plant.
Nissan will not take any new orders for Infiniti QX50 and QX55 SUVs for the US market, which are made at the COMPAS facility in Mexico that it shares with Mercedes-Benz. Nissan said manufacture of models marketed in other areas will continue. It was unclear how much of the produce was sold to foreign markets. According to data from Mexico’s national statistics agency, just two Infiniti models were shipped to the United States.
A Nissan spokeswoman in Japan said on Saturday that the models are made for and exported to countries such as Mexico, Panama, the Middle East, and Canada, but did not provide any information about the vehicles’ production plans.
