‘Hacked and Blamed’: UAE Credit Card Scam victims Demand More Protection Against Crooks

A recent Khaleej Times piece about a Dubai-based surgeon whose credit card was misused while she was in the operating room has sparked outrage. Since the article was published, scores of UAE residents have come forward and told similar stories: Credit cards were used without permission, with no OTPs or notifications, and little to no assistance from their banks. Several claimed that they were left not only covering the bill but also facing court notices, growing debt, and constant recovery calls.

Daniel, a schoolteacher, was travelling from Abu Dhabi to Dubai on March 19 when his credit card was compromised. “My son was five days old. I just had Dh500 left, and I wasn’t sure how my family would feed in the coming days.

I hadn’t shared anything or clicked any links, but my card kept being charged,” he told Khaleej Times. “I had to request the bank to block it.”Meanwhile, cybersecurity consultant Mohammad Asif Batkali claimed he was duped by a seemingly ordinary supermarket promotion on Facebook. “The scammer utilised what appeared to be a government payment gateway to rob me of Dh18,230. Even after I reported it, the money was processed. “The (bogus) site is still active.
