In the occupied West Bank city of Ramallah, an AFP journalist reported that a bus bringing a number of Palestinian detainees freed by Israel on Saturday under the terms of the ceasefire agreement in Gaza arrived to a joyful throng.
The journalist said the released inmates, dressed in traditional keffiyeh scarves, were lifted on the shoulders of the crowd and embraced family members before going to a brief medical examination. One prisoner kissed a baby as soon as he got off the bus, and several others in the audience waved the yellow flags of the Fatah party of the Palestinian Authority. In contrast to earlier releases, the inmates wore jackets instead of flaunting their jail attire.
Israeli public media earlier on Saturday featured pictures of Palestinian detainees wearing sweatshirts with the prison service insignia, a Star of David, and the words, “We will not forget and we will not forgive,” before they were released. In the most recent exchange, Israel was to free 369 prisoners, according to the advocacy group Palestinian Prisoners’ Club.
