In a phone chat with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday, US President Donald Trump highlighted the necessity of India purchasing more American-made security equipment and pursuing a fair bilateral commercial partnership, according to the White House.
Trump later informed reporters that they discussed immigration and that Modi plans to visit the United States in February. The White House previously stated that the two presidents had discussed plans for Modi’s visit. In what the White House described as a “productive call,” the leaders discussed expanding and deepening collaboration, as well as security problems in the Indo-Pacific, Middle East, and Europe.
Reuters reported last week that Indian and US diplomats are attempting to organise a meeting of the presidents as early as February.
Trump and Modi had good relations during the US president’s first term, but during his re-election campaign, Trump labelled India a “very big abuser” of trade and promised to put taxes on global imports into the US to redress imbalances. Trump has also threatened the BRICS group of nations, which includes India, with tariffs if they do not agree to not develop a new currency.
