In Texas, a Collision Involving 17 Cars Claimed Five lives and Injured Eleven

Following a late-night collision involving more than a dozen automobiles on Interstate 35 in Austin, Texas, which left five people dead and numerous others injured, officials charged a man with intoxication manslaughter.

Three adults, a toddler, and an infant were among the five individuals killed in the collision involving 17 vehicles shortly before 11:30 p.m., according to authorities. Eleven people were sent to hospitals, according to first responders.

Following the collision, Austin police announced Friday that 37-year-old Solomun Weldekeal Araya was charged with five counts of intoxication manslaughter and two counts of intoxication assault. According to police, he was being held at the Travis County Jail. Whether he had a lawyer or not was not immediately apparent. He has no lawyer listed in jail records.

The police have not described the events leading up to the collision. In an email sent on Friday, police stated that they were still in the early stages of the investigation and did not yet have any additional information to share.

After the collision, I-35’s southbound lanes were blocked and remained closed until Friday, when they were reopened at around 1 p.m. A section of the interstate was covered in debris and wrecked cars after the collision.
