Iran Announced That the Second Round of Nuclear Talks With the US Will Take Place in Rome

Following initial uncertainty over the location of the upcoming nuclear talks, Iran announced on Wednesday that the next session will take place in Rome this weekend. Iranian state media reported the news simultaneously with the announcement that Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian had officially accepted the resignation of one of his vice presidents, who had been a major negotiator for Tehran in the country’s 2015 nuclear agreement with international powers.

Rafael Mariano Grossi of the International Atomic Energy Agency, who leads the UN’s nuclear watchdog, also landed in the Islamic Republic Wednesday. Negotiations over the specific access that the IAEA inspectors would have under any proposed agreement may be part of his discussions.

Oman will resume negotiations with Italy on Saturday in Rome, according to an official TV statement. During negotiations last weekend in the capital of the sultanate, Muscat, Oman’s foreign minister acted as a mediator between the two parties.

Iran insisted early on Tuesday that they would return to Oman, despite officials first identifying Rome as the venue for the talks on Monday. Although Trump called Sultan Haitham bin Tariq of Oman on Tuesday when the monarch was in the Netherlands, American officials have not yet made public the location of the meeting.
