Iran Declares that the Attack on Israel is over, raising Concerns about a Wider Battle

With growing worries of a bigger war, Israel and the US pledged to retaliate on Wednesday, as Iran declared that its missile attack on Israel—its largest military operation to date—was finished, barring more provocation.

According to Israeli officials, US news website Axios said on Wednesday that Israel will undertake a “significant retaliation” within days that might target Iranian oil production facilities as well as other important locations.

Wednesday’s fighting between Israel and Hezbollah, which is located in Lebanon, continued in spite of appeals for a ceasefire made by the US, EU, and UN. Israel resumed its barrage on the Iran-backed Hezbollah’s stronghold, the southern suburbs of Beirut, with at least a dozen airstrikes against targets it claimed to be group property.

Parts of the suburbs were emitting large plumes of smoke. After days of intense strikes, Israel issued fresh instructions for the area’s evacuation, which has largely taken place. Hezbollah claimed to have challenged and driven out Israeli commandos who had infiltrated the Lebanese hamlet of Adaisseh early on Wednesday.

Iran said that Israel’s targets in the attack on Tuesday were only military installations. Three Israeli military bases were reportedly targeted, according to Iran’s official news agency.
