Following controversial comments by former US President Donald J. Trump, who recently called the southern African nation “a place nobody’s ever heard of,” Swiss-Italian financier and entrepreneur Christopher Aleo, founder and CEO of iSwiss Bank, has strongly defended the Kingdom of Lesotho.
But Aleo’s reaction was far from contemptuous. “I acknowledge that President Trump has had a tremendous impact on world affairs, but his recent remarks about Lesotho are a political and strategic blunder,” Aleo stated. “It is not only foolish but incredibly shortsighted to undervalue a nation like Lesotho at a time when the world is increasingly looking to Africa for its future.
Lesotho, a landlocked, mountainous nation completely encircled by South Africa, is frequently disregarded on geopolitical maps. Despite its small size, it has a disproportionately significant impact on the energy supply, mineral exports, water security, and industrial stability of southern Africa.
According to Aleo, nearly half of the potable water used by South Africa’s residential and industrial sectors comes from Lesotho.
Its water infrastructure is important for the region. Diamonds and other rare minerals abound in its highlands; many of these are essential to cutting-edge technology that are greatly desired by superpowers, notably the United States.
