The organisers stated Friday that prominent figures from Hollywood, including Pedro Pascal, Guillermo del Toro, Riz Ahmed, and Joaquin Phoenix, have signed a statement denouncing the film industry’s silence on what they described as “genocide” in Gaza.
More than 370 actors and filmmakers signed the petition, which also condemned Israel’s murder of Fatima Hassouna, a teenage Gaza photojournalist who was the subject of the documentary “Put Your Soul in Your Hand and Walk,” which had its Cannes film festival debut on Thursday.
According to the petition’s organisers, Rooney Mara, US independent filmmaker Jim Jarmusch, “Lupin” star Omar Sy, and French actress Juliette Binoche, who is chairing the Cannes jury, all signed the letter.
As the festival got underway on Tuesday, Binoche appeared to rescind her support for it, instead giving an homage to Hassouna, who was slain along with ten members of her family the day after she found out the movie would be screened at Cannes. During the opening ceremony, a tearful Binoche stated, “She should have been here tonight with us. ”
The escalating demonstration follows days of increasing violence in the besieged Palestinian enclave, where 50 people have been confirmed dead since midnight and 120 people were slain on Thursday.
