Muslims nationwide excitedly awaited the first Taraweeh prayers of the holy month as UAE officials declared the sighting of the crescent moon, marking the beginning of Ramadan. Worshippers approached mosques with devotion, wearing clean clothes, putting on perfume, and washing their hands in their houses. To reserve their places for the unique night prayers that signal the start of the holy month, many people gathered even before the Isha adhan.
During prayer, people stood side by side while imams recited passages from the Quran. For many, this is not just the start of Ramadan; it’s also a time to renew their religion, take stock of their lives, and deepen their dedication. At the mosques, children as young as six accompanied their parents. While some brought water bottles to drink on during the lengthy prayers, others carried prayer mats.
Ahmed Khalil, a Dubai resident who went to the Isha and Taraweeh prayers at the Bin Dalmouk mosque in Al Mamzar, discussed the night’s spiritual significance. He said he had been looking forward to Ramadan and the opportunity to attend the special prayers.
