Pregnancy Issues are Becoming More Likely Due to Climate Change

A study warned Wednesday that global warming-fueled scorching heatwaves are raising the risk of hazardous pregnancy problems worldwide. Extreme heat exposure during pregnancy has been associated with several issues in the past, such as an increased chance of stillbirth, early delivery, birth abnormalities, and gestational diabetes.

The goal of the recent analysis from the US-based research organisation Climate Central was to quantify the increase in pregnant women’s exposure to extreme heat since 2020 and the degree to which climate change is to blame.

According to the paper, “climate change at least doubled the average annual number of pregnancy heat-risk days experienced during the past five years” in 222 of the 247 nations and territories examined.

The Caribbean, Central and South America, the Pacific islands, Southeast Asia, and sub-Saharan Africa are among the emerging nations with the most tremendous gains in healthcare access. The researchers did not investigate the degree to which pregnant women were impacted by heat in the countries; instead, they focused solely on the increase in potentially hazardous hot days.

It “gives clear evidence of the growing exposure,” according to Ana Bonell, a maternal health and high heat researcher at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine who was not involved in the investigation.
