The Official MENA Chart stated today that it has implemented a new set of guidelines for the eligibility of recordings created using generative artificial intelligence (GenAI). Official charts in Egypt, North Africa, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates follow these concepts as well.
The Official MENA Chart, which debuted in 2022, rates the most popular songs from 13 Middle Eastern and North African markets. It is powered by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) and based on data from top streaming providers, making it the official measure of music success in the region. In addition to the regional chart, the IFPI administers official national charts in Egypt, North Africa, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.
The framework will provide a clear line between human-led creativity and works that are entirely synthetic or created by unlawful AI models. It will also help to ensure that no music with fraudulently increased stream counts is recognised and celebrated in the charts.
These principles, developed by the IFPI and supported by a broad coalition of music companies including Sony Music, Universal Music Group, and Warner Music Group, will allow official charts to accommodate appropriate use of AI in the creative process while remaining an authentic celebration of human artistry.
