Syria Sanctions on 24 Companies, Including the National Bank, are Lifted By the UK

According to a statement, the UK government withdrew sanctions against 24 organizations, including Syria’s Central Bank, that were put in place during the tenure of former Syrian leader Bashar Al Assad on Thursday.

Following the new Syrian government’s efforts to convince Western capitals that the rebels who overthrew Assad after 14 years in power had put their terrorist roots in the past, the UK government announced last month that it would be easing sanctions. 24 entries have been removed from the consolidated list and are no longer subject to an asset freeze,” the Treasury said Thursday when it unveiled an updated sanctions list.

Companies in the energy, transportation, and financial sectors are eligible for the sanctions to be lifted. Among these are the General Petroleum Corporation (GPC), Syrian Arab Airlines, and a number of institutions, such as the Commercial Bank of Syria and the Agricultural Cooperative Bank.

However, there are still hundreds of sanctions against people and organizations.
According to Stephen Doughty, the foreign office minister, any modifications to the sanctions were made “to support the Syrian people in re-building their country and promote security and stability” last month.
