A senior Hamas source stated on Thursday that an Israeli airstrike had killed the son of Hamas’ main negotiator in US-mediated negotiations over Gaza’s future. The Palestinian group’s leaders were in Cairo for talks to protect their ceasefire with Israel.
According to senior Hamas leader Basim Naim, Azzam Al Hayya, the son of Khalil Al Hayya, died on Thursday from his injuries following an Israeli attack on Wednesday night. He is the fourth son of the Gaza head of Hamas to be murdered in Israeli strikes. A request for comment from the Israeli military was not answered.
Later on Thursday, an Israeli airstrike attacked a police position in western Gaza City, resulting in at least two Palestinian deaths and injuries, according to health officials. Whether any of the people slain were police officers was not immediately apparent.
The Israeli military did not immediately respond.
In an interview with Al Jazeera following the attack on Wednesday night, prior to the announcement of his son’s passing, Hayya charged Israel with attempting to thwart the work of mediators to advance US President Donald Trump’s Gaza plan, which is being supervised by his alleged “Board of Peace.
