The PM of Lebanon Promises Reforms and Creates a new Administration

To help the nation get closer to receiving reconstruction funding after a disastrous conflict between Israel and Hizbollah, the United States intervened in the process in an unusually direct manner, and on Saturday, Lebanon created a new government.

The 24-member cabinet will prioritise financial reforms, reconstruction, and the implementation of a United Nations resolution seen as a cornerstone of stability on the Lebanese border with Israel,” new Prime Minister Nawaf Salam told reporters at the presidential palace.

The statement followed days of impasse over the Shi’ite Muslim ministers, typically chosen by Hizbollah and its Shi’ite allies Amal, and more than three weeks of negotiations with competing political groups in Lebanon, where government positions are distributed based on sect.

In a contentious speech that provoked riots in Lebanon, US deputy Middle East envoy Morgan Ortagus stated on Friday that the US saw Hizbollah’s participation in the new cabinet as a “red line” and commended Israel for striking the group severe blows.

However, in the end, Amal, the ally of Hizbollah led by Speaker of the Parliament Nabih Berri, was permitted to select four members of the new cabinet, including Yassin Jaber, the finance minister, and approve a fifth.
