The Strait of Hormuz is now completely open to commercial ships, according to statements made on Friday by Iran’s foreign minister and US President Donald Trump, as a 10-day ceasefire in Lebanon seems to be holding.

The ceasefire provided a break in hostilities between Israel and the Hizbollah organization and could remove a significant barrier to an agreement between Iran, the United States, and Israel to put an end to weeks of catastrophic conflict. Iran declared that the strait “is fully open and ready for full passage,” according to a statement made by Trump on social media.

The passage for all commercial vessels through the strait is “is declared completely open” in accordance with the ceasefire in Lebanon, according to a post by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on X minutes ago. It will remain open for the duration of the ceasefire, he said.

Trump said on Truth Social shortly after Araqchi’s remarks: “IRAN HAS JUST ANNOUNCED THAT THE STRAIT OF IRAN IS FULLY OPEN AND READY FOR PASSAGE.” Trump, however, stated that the US military blockade of ships passing through the Strait to Iranian ports, which was imposed following the failure of negotiations with Iran last weekend in the Pakistani city of Islamabad, was still in effect.
