Trump Sees ‘Good Chance’ for Iran Deal, Warns Strikes Could Resume if Negotiations Fail

US President Donald Trump said on Monday he hoped diplomacy with Iran could yield a solution to end the months-long confrontation, but warned Washington would resume military strikes if talks failed. I have a lot of patience. We’ll see what happens. “I think there is a very good chance that something could happen,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One when asked about the prospect for progress in the peace talks. If it doesn’t, we go back to what we were doing two days ago.

After 13 nights of continued US strikes, Iran and the United States have now paused their fire for three straight days, presenting a slim chance for negotiation after an earlier ceasefire deal aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz fell apart.

Trump said Iranian authorities had asked for a meeting, adding “the only reason they want to meet is because we’ve been hitting them very hard.”

But Tehran earlier denied direct talks were taking place, saying mediators were simply passing instructions from Washington. Lisa McClain and Donald Trump arrive Monday at Oakland County International Airport for a visit at General Motors’ Milford Proving Grounds in Michigan.
