Filipinos Celebrate the First-ever Philippine Independence Day in Fujairah

One of the most historic events will take place on June 13 (Saturday) in Fujairah, where the first Filipino workers and residents were registered 36 years ago. Event organizers Fevie Laurilla and Michael John Bergado, who have lived in the UAE for 20 and 11 years, decided to work together on the initiative to solve a “observed gap.”

We wish to bring the spirit of ‘Kalayaan’ (Freedom, Liberty, and Independence) closer to Filipinos in the Northern Emirates. “There has never been a large-scale Philippine Independence Day celebration in any of the Northern Emirates,” said Laurilla, who is originally from Rizal Province in the Southern Tagalog Region of Luzon Island.

“It is about time that we have one in Fujairah; with Fevie’s events and community organizing exposure,” Bergado added. Bergado came to the UAE in 2015 to pursue a business job. He subsequently founded MCS-MJB Consulting Services, which focuses on business consulting, training, strategic planning, and community and event projects.

During their preparation, they learned that it was in the “early 1990s when Filipinos discovered Fujairah, primarily through opportunities in the hospitality, construction, and service sectors, which were among the first industries” in the emirate “to employ overseas workers.
