According to sources from the health and civil defence agency, an Israeli airstrike occurred early on Saturday morning in Gaza City, resulting in the death of at least five Palestinians who were residing in an apartment block. The Israeli military did not immediately issue a statement regarding the situation.
A truce was established in the territory by the United States of America in the previous year; however, the negotiators have not reached a consensus on the terms that would require Hamas to disarm and Israel to withdraw its forces.
In the past several weeks, Israel has increased the number of strikes it has carried out against Hamas. Israel claims that Hamas has been rearming and initiating attacks in breach of a ceasefire that was agreed upon in October. Carrying the body of a Palestinian victim who was murdered in an Israeli bombing early on Saturday morning, mourners carry the body of the victim.
Despite the fact that Hamas has denied any attempts to carry out attacks or develop its arsenal, Israel is being accused of undermining the peace pact that was reached in Gaza. Since the truce that was implemented in October of last year, Gaza health officials have reported that Israeli fire has resulted in the deaths of at least 1,400 Palestinians. Over the same time period, Israel has said that Hamas had been responsible for the deaths of four of its soldiers in Gaza.
