Iran’s foreign minister warned Tuesday that a tentative deal to end the war with the United States would need Israel to withdraw from Lebanon – a demand Israel has already rejected and that may scuttle the pact, leading to a resumption of all-out war.
The US and Iran accord has not been made public and officials have at times presented divergent interpretations of what is in it. Israel, which is not a party to the pact, is part of the battle after assisting the US in strikes against
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said an Israeli occupation of southern Lebanon would breach the accord.“The war will not end unless Israel pulls out its forces from the territories it occupied during this war,” Araghchi stated.
A US official, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss parameters of the accord, has stated the arrangement does not call for an Israeli departure. And Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated Monday that Israel will be in Lebanon “as long as necessary.”
Disagreements like these have plagued discussions to end the war before, resulting in a long but uneasy ceasefire that has failed to lead to a permanent end to hostilities and has essentially closed the Strait of Hormuz, a vital passageway for the world’s petroleum supplies.
