On Tuesday, US President Donald Trump tweeted a map on his Truth Social platform depicting the Strait of Hormuz as “NEW US Territory,” reiterating his threat to assert sovereignty over the key waterway. In retribution for the battle Trump and Israel launched in late February, Iran has effectively shut down the chokepoint that transports one-fifth of the world’s oil.
Trump initially mentioned the possibility of a US takeover on Friday, saying in a cheerful tone that he would soon declare it US territory, prompting Iran to respond that the strait “will remain Iranian.” On Monday, Trump brought up the notion again in remarks to reporters in the Oval Office, implying that it would be a good idea.
When confronted with a foreign policy challenge, Trump has already threatened to annex foreign land. Since retaking power in 2025, he has vowed to declare Canada the 51st US state, acquire Greenland, and even referred to seizing control of the Gaza Strip, but has not followed through on any of these threats.
