14 Cities in Italy are Under a Red Heat Alert

Although excessive temperatures and health concerns persist throughout much of the country, the number of Italian cities under the highest-level heat wave warning will decrease over the weekend, according to the ANSA news agency. Italy’s Ministry of Health reports that 16 cities were placed under a red heat alert on Saturday, down from a previous prediction of 19. On Sunday, the number drops to 14.

According to meteorologists, southern Italy will continue to be the most severely affected area, with temperatures in some places topping 50C (122F). As the African anticyclone moves westward on Monday, forecasters predict that the present heat wave will start to wane.

Although temperatures are predicted to gradually drop, southern Italy and the islands are expected to stay extremely hot. According to the national weather agency, temperatures are expected to rise beyond 40C in many areas of Spain on Tuesday, marking the start of the country’s third heatwave of the summer.

According to a statement from AEMET, the heatwave will be fueled by a persistent region of high pressure that will trap hot, dry air from North Africa over Spain for many days, raising temperatures to abnormally high levels.
