Hezbollah claimed to have fired hundreds of rockets and drones in retaliation for the death of one of its top commanders last month. Israel responded with a flurry of airstrikes over southern Lebanon early on Sunday, claiming it was a preemptive strike on the terrorist organisation.
The intense firefight raised the possibility of a full-scale conflict involving the US, Iran, and other parties in the area. Additionally, it might undermine attempts to bring about a cease-fire in Gaza, where Israel has been at war for more than ten months with Hezbollah’s ally, the Palestinian organisation Hamas.
Hezbollah was preparing to launch a powerful barrage of rockets and missiles towards Israel, according to the Israeli military. Not long after, Hezbollah declared that it had attacked Israeli military installations in retaliation for the Israeli airstrike that killed one of its founders, Fouad Shukur, in Beirut last month.
Attacks occurred as Egypt is hosting fresh negotiations to put an end to the conflict between Israel and Hamas. Hezbollah has declared that if a cease-fire is reached in Gaza, it will end the conflict. Iran backs these factions as well as those who may join any wider conflict in Yemen, Syria, or Iraq.
There were reports of air raid sirens in the northern part of Israel, and the Ben-Gurion international airport temporarily delayed takeoffs and diverted incoming aircraft. Flights were resumed at 7 a.m. local time, according to Israel’s Airports Authority.
