Kenyan Critical Energy Transition Minerals Panel, Chaired by the UN Secretary-General, Includes the UAE

Along with representatives of other governments, organisations, and experts, Abdulla Balalaa, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Energy and Sustainability, took part in the United Nations Critical Energy Transition Minerals (CETM) Panel that was held in Nairobi, Kenya.

Since its founding in April 2024, the UN CETM Panel has engaged in constructive dialogue on significant issues pertaining to the mining industry, ensuring the creation of worldwide voluntary guiding principles on critical minerals. The panellists at this most recent meeting emphasised the need for stronger foundations and an emphasis on global cooperation in order to achieve benefits for all parties involved in the mining industry.

Balalaa applauded the UN Panel’s findings, which aligned with the pressing need to prevent global warming to 1.5°C and with ongoing efforts to reach net zero. In order to both usher in a new era of climate action and safeguard local communities from any environmental or climate damage linked to the mining process, he emphasised the significance of strengthening an environmental response based on sustainable policies and practices.

In order to accomplish the intended transformative results, he also emphasised the importance of fostering confidence at a broader level, enabling mineral-rich nations to establish an atmosphere that supports economic growth. Balalaa emphasised the significance of drawing ethical investment into the mining industry in order to aid these nations, improve their capacity for adaptation, and guarantee a seamless shift to clean and renewable energy.
