Obaid Humaid Al Mazrouei, The Founder of the Al Fajr Newspaper, dies at The Age of 91

He died this morning, Monday, following a distinguished career spanning more than 50 years as the founder and chief editor of “Al Fajr,” a prestigious Emirati newspaper.

The death of Obaid Humaid Al Mazrouei has left the Emirati journalism community without a major media and cultural icon instrumental in shaping the country’s media history. He had a significant impact on the UAE’s and the region’s literary and cultural landscapes and was intimately linked to the country’s growth since the early days of the Union.

Al Mazrouei, who was born in Ajman in 1935, first worked in Saudi Arabia’s oil industry before switching to banking. He eventually devoted himself to journalism because he believed it was his true calling. He was a firm believer in the ability of words and media to benefit his nation and society.

The newspaper Al Fajr was first published on March 17, 1975, after Obaid Humaid Al Mazrouei obtained a license to publish it in 1974. With its name signifying the start of a new era for the country, the journal became a key record of the UAE’s progress from its early years.
