Early on Wednesday, Bahrain stopped an Iranian air strike as Tehran persisted in firing on US allies in the Gulf despite President Donald Trump’s warnings to intensify US military strikes. In a statement, Bahrain’s military accused Iran of “attacks targeting civilians” and claimed that its air defence systems had intercepted incoming Iranian fire. Bahrain is home to a significant US naval station.
Fighting between the US and Iran has escalated since the weekend when the US military struck Iranian rocket launchers on an island in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran replied by shooting missiles at American sites in Jordan, all of which were intercepted, following a break of more than a month.
In addition to causing a surge in oil prices, upsetting the world economy, and creating more political challenges for Trump’s Republican party ahead of the midterm elections in November, the increased violence threatens to completely rekindle a conflict that is currently in its seventh month. The price of Brent crude oil, the worldwide standard, has increased by more than 30% since the war began, surpassing $95 since the fighting resumed. Iran fired drones at Kuwait and missiles at Jordan prior to the morning attacks on Bahrain, but both were intercepted.
