Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia, is expected to have bilateral discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi after arriving in New Delhi on Friday to attend the 18th BRICS Summit. In a post on X, Randhir Jaiswal, a spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, confirmed Putin’s arrival in the nation’s capital: “Warmly welcome President Vladimir Putin of Russia for the 18th BRICS Summit. MoS @KVSinghMPGonda met him at the airport. Russia and India have a long-standing, complex relationship based on the Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership.
Indian broadcasters said that Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian also arrived in New Delhi on Friday for the 11-member BRICS conference, where the Middle East crisis will be a major topic of discussion. According to the IRNA news agency, Pezeshkian will meet with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his first visit to India as a leader. Saturday marks the start of the two-day BRICS conference.
Putin’s visit follows his meeting with Prime Minister Modi last week on the fringes of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization conference in Bishkek, and also coincides with ongoing high-level contact between India and Russia.
In reference to the Russia-Ukraine conflict that started five years ago after Moscow’s full-scale invasion, Prime Minister Modi encouraged Putin to move from an “endless war toward the end of the war during their meeting in Bishkek.
