Iran’s senior negotiator said on Sunday that Tehran had communicated its criteria for lifting the blockage of the vital Strait of Hormuz to Washington via mediators. The two adversaries are at a standstill, months after the crisis began with US-Israeli bombings on Iran in late February.
Tehran controls the strait, a critical shipping route for oil and gas, while Washington aims to stifle Iran’s ports and economy. Iranian parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, who serves as the principal negotiator in peace negotiations, stated that their messages and conditions were clearly communicated to the opposing party via mediators.
As long as the requirements are not satisfied and the US agreements are not kept, it will be impossible to return to the pre-negotiation position and an open strait,” he said, according to state television. Mohsen Rezaei, the president of Iran’s top national security council, stated on Saturday that the Islamic Republic transmitted its criteria to the US through mediator Qatar.
