Italy will outlaw burqas and niqabs in schools and limit the number of foreign pupils in each class, far-right Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced on Sunday. Italy is a frontline country for migration, and integration is a major campaign issue in next year’s general election.
Meloni told the young branch of her Brothers of Italy (FdI) party that she would soon present a proposal to limit the number of foreign students per class to the cabinet.It also compels parents of international children having difficulty integrating into the school system to learn Italian and prohibits burqas and niqabs in classrooms,” she explained.
In July, the National Future (FN) party called for a ban on burkas in schools. The FN, which is not a member of the governing coalition, is more to the right than Meloni’s and has emerged as a significant contender, increasing dramatically in surveys since its inception in February. While no law in Italy directly outlaws burqas in schools or public places, a 1975 law restricts the use of helmets or clothes that make identification difficult unless there is a valid reason.
