US and Iranian officials spoke Tuesday for the first time in months, President Donald Trump said, even as he warned the United Nations he was still considering whether to “annihilate” Iran. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi joined a meeting with Trump’s roving envoy Steve Witkoff and son-in-law Jared Kushner on the margins of the UN General Assembly in New York. Trump’s carrot-and-stick approach started with a fiery address to the UN General Assembly in New York, focusing primarily on his faltering and unpopular battle against the Islamic Republic.
“I have a big decision to make -will a deal be made with Iran that allows them to rebuild and create a far greater country?” the 80-year-old stated in his speech, during which all but one member of the Iranian delegation stormed out. “Or do I wipe out the Islamic Republic, and do it quick, so they don’t get a chance to kill and destroy people and countries again? Do I push them into hell with no hope of survival?” Trump said he thought Iran will strike a deal soon after November’s midterm elections — in which Republicans risk losing control of Congress, due in large part to the drag on the US economy of the confrontation.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian will address the UN General Assembly on Wednesday. After his speech, Trump said Iranian and US representatives met for three hours on the margins of the UN gathering. “They had a very good meeting, a very productive meeting they have another one scheduled in the very near future,” Trump told reporters as he met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
