U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned Monday that American sanctions will make it difficult for Iranian planes to function globally in two days as the Trump administration strives to keep pressure on Tehran.
‘If they arrive, you can’t give them fuel, you can’t give them landing services, you can’t sell them tickets or you’ll be thrown out of the dollar system,’ he said. The United States and Iran have been at war since late February, when US-Israeli strikes killed the Islamic Republic’s supreme commander and other military officers at the beginning of a sweeping offensive.
Tehran retaliated by shutting off the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for energy transit, sending global oil prices higher amid the increasing war in the Middle East.
The United States imposed sanctions on “all remaining Iranian airlines” not sanctioned earlier this month. The Treasury Department also targeted anyone assisting Iran’s aviation industry, including outside the country. Earlier, Bessent had promised that the United States will declare “economic D-Day” on Iran and vowed to suffocate Tehran financially.
