Chinese tech giant Alibaba said Wednesday it would expand its international data centers, with a focus on markets in Europe and the Middle East. The business claimed it would “establish its first cloud regions” in Turkey, Finland and the Netherlands and “expand its data center footprint in Malaysia, Germany, the United Arab Emirates, France and Hong Kong” during the next 12 months.
Hangzhou-based Alibaba is a leader in China’s artificial intelligence industry, and its Qwen model is among the most downloaded AI models worldwide. The declaration came ahead of a highly anticipated meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and his US counterpart Donald Trump in Washington where the two leaders are set to address trade issues among other subjects.
The tech battle between Beijing and Washington is increasingly focusing on frontier areas such as semiconductors, AI and robotics. Alibaba’s CEO Eddie Wu stated Tuesday that the business plans to train an AI model with five to 10 trillion parameters, which would be several times bigger than the current greatest Chinese model. Alibaba is looking at more than 20 gigawatts of data center capacity worldwide by 2032, Wu said at the company’s annual flagship conference in Hangzhou.
