Harrison Ford fought back tears as he thought back on his performance in the 1974 movie “The Conversation,” Robert De Niro teased that he was cast in the sequel rather than the original, and Steven Spielberg declared “The Godfather” the “greatest American film ever made.” Francis Ford Coppola was at the core of it all. He was honoured with the AFI Life Achievement Award on Saturday in a ceremony held at the Dolby Theatre, which brought together iconic film actors from an age that seemed to be in the past.
Coppola was a founding trustee of AFI, so the “Apocalypse Now” director’s acknowledgement from the group was a sort of full circle moment. “There was only the Oscars when I was a child. On the red carpet before to the presentation, the 86-year-old said, “They’re going to have an award show for the best award show.” However, this is a bit different since it’s a personal acknowledgement of the individuals you’ve known throughout your life as well as your long-time coworkers; in a sense, it’s a homecoming.
