At a demonstration demanding the resignation of President Andry Rajoelina in Antananarivo, Madagascar, on Tuesday, demonstrators dance on top of a car. AP With 130 votes in favor, the impeachment vote was approved, much above the two-thirds majority needed by the constitution in the 163-member house.
Anger about water and electricity shortages sparked the youth-led rallies, which later turned into protests against the government and the ruling class. Rajoelina stated in a national speech late on Monday that he was in a “safe place to protect my life” but did not specify where he was, following allegations that he had fled the country with French help.
Declaring that he was on a mission to find solutions” to the political turmoil and that he would not allow the poor Indian Ocean nation to “destroy itself,” the 51-year-old made it clear that he would not resign.
