PM Shahbaz Says Ready for Talks if Afghanistan Agrees to Pakistan’s Conditions

As days of intense warfare between the erstwhile allies came to an end, Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif declared on Thursday that Islamabad was prepared to negotiate a settlement with Afghanistan.

Before agreeing to a 48-hour truce starting at 1300 GMT on Wednesday, the South Asian neighbors fought on foot and Pakistan fired airstrikes across their disputed border, killing scores and injuring hundreds. In Islamabad, Shahbaz informed his cabinet that Pakistan had “retaliated” after growing impatient with Afghanistan after a string of Taliban strikes.

If they would like to talk on our valid requirements and want to reach an agreement through dialogue we are ready for that,” Shahbaz stated. “They received this message yesterday. They now have the upper hand. “If this ceasefire is done just to buy time, we will not accept it,” he stated. Kabul did not immediately respond to his comments; Enayatullah Khowarazmi, a spokesman for the Afghan defense ministry, stated that the ceasefire was still in effect.

Interior Minister Khalifa Sirajuddin Haqqani met with high-ranking Iranian officials and informed them that Afghanistan aspires to good relations with all nations, particularly its neighbors, according to a statement from the Afghan Taliban Interior Ministry.
