The Indian government has changed the rules for baggage for people arriving in the country. They have raised the limits on the items that people can bring without having to pay customs, such as gold jewellery. A woman returning to India may bring up to 40 grams of gold jewellery without incurring customs fees. Other passengers can bring up to 20 grams as part of their personal luggage.
Other amendments raise the limit on how much general items can be brought into the country without paying customs. Indian residents or tourists of Indian descent can now bring things valued up to Rs75,000 (Dh3,000) without paying customs. The old maximum was Rs50,000 (Dh2,000). Foreign tourists can now bring up to Rs25,000 (Dh1,000) in goods without paying customs duties. The old maximum was Rs15,000 (Dh601).
On Sunday, February 1, during her speech on India’s 2026 budget, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman also suggested lowering tariffs on goods imported for personal use from 20% to 10%. “I want to make the customs duty system more fair for goods brought into the country for personal use,” she stated. “I want to lower the tariff rate on all dutiable goods brought into the country for personal use from 20 percent to 10 percent.
