In collaboration with Abu Dhabi Ports Company and “Autotech,” a multinational company that specializes in creating self-driving vehicle systems, the Integrated Transport Centre (ITC), which is connected to the Department of Municipalities and Transport in Abu Dhabi, announced that it will oversee the start of a pilot project for operating self-driving trucks in Abu Dhabi within the Khalifa Economic Zones – Abu Dhabi (KEZAD).
The initiative, which reflects the growth of self-driving system applications across several modes of transportation, is the first of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa region in terms of operating self-driving vehicles for logistics and cargo transit.
In 2025, the developing company, under the Center’s supervision, worked to align AI-based self-driving systems with local road requirements and logistical transport needs, ensuring safe and smooth journeys, in accordance with the highest safety and operational efficiency standards, and to evaluate the technology’s readiness for operation in real-world conditions. ITC explained that the program focuses on evaluating the operation of self-driving trucks within a specific industrial and logistical environment, where trial runs were conducted on dedicated routes within KEZAD areas, in accordance with approved regulatory frameworks and operational standards.
