To Fix a Strained relationship, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney Travels to India
After ties soured under his predecessor in recent years, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney made his first official trip to India on Friday, arriving in Mumbai with the goal of repairing the relationship and strengthening trade collaboration with New Delhi. Carney will meet with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Monday as part of his four-day tour, which also includes meetings with business leaders.
In a statement released on Thursday, India’s foreign ministry said the two leaders’ meeting would provide a chance to restate “the positive momentum and shared vision” for a partnership that looks to the future. According to the ministry, Modi and Carney’s discussions are anticipated to focus on energy, vital minerals, technology, and trade and investment cooperation.
In an attempt to diversify commerce away from the US, Carney will also travel to Australia and Japan the following week. Carney claims that American tariffs are discouraging investment and has set a target for Canada to treble its non-U.S. exports within the next ten years. Following two years of tense relations, Canada and India took steps last year to move forward with a trade agreement.
