In an attempt to escape the Israeli siege, a second flotilla carrying humanitarian aid to Palestinians in Gaza was scheduled to depart on Sunday from the Spanish port of Barcelona. The Global Sumud Flotilla is scheduled to depart the Mediterranean port city with some thirty boats loaded with supplies and medical help, and additional ships are anticipated to join along the way to Palestine.
Greta Thunberg, a Swedish activist, and over 450 other participants were arrested after the Israeli military stopped the about 40 boats that the same organization had organized in October of last year as they tried to enter blockaded Gaza.
Israel, which has complete control over entry to the Gaza Strip, denies depriving its more than two million inhabitants of supplies. Despite a ceasefire established in October that included promises of greater aid, Palestinians and foreign humanitarian organizations claim that supplies are still not reaching the enclave.
Every kilogram of aid that is on these ships is a failure because all these people on these ships giving up their time to help their fellow human beings are doing what their governments are legally obliged to do,” Liam Cunningham, an actor who starred in the Game of Thrones television series and is supporting the flotilla but is not participating, told Reuters.
