A Month-old Girl is Rescued From the Rubble in Gaza After an Attack Killed her Parents

On Thursday, while rescuers searched through the rubble of a collapsed apartment building in Gaza’s Khan Younis, they heard a baby’s cries from underneath. Suddenly, shouts of “God is great” burst forth. A man dashed away from the wreckage, carrying a surviving newborn wrapped in a blanket and handing her over to a waiting ambulance crew. The infant girl squirmed while paramedics examined her. Her parents and brother were killed in a nighttime Israeli airstrike.

The girl’s name was Ella Osama Abu Dagga. She was born 25 days ago, during a precarious ceasefire that many Palestinians in Gaza believed would bring an end to a conflict that had ravaged the territory, killed tens of thousands, and displaced virtually its entire population.

Only the girl’s grandparents escaped the onslaught. Her brother, mother, and father were all killed, as was another family consisting of a father and seven children. Rescue workers could be seen crawling through the wreckage, bringing out the little body of a toddler splayed on the mattress where he had been resting.
