Western nations expressed indignation on Thursday after Israel’s far-right security minister shared a video of himself making fun of flotilla activists headed for Gaza while they were pinned to the ground. Two of the activists later claimed they had been physically abused while in custody.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the United States, Israel’s most ardent ally, both condemned the way the protestors were treated by police personnel under the command of National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir.
The activists were scheduled to be deported from Israel on Thursday after their ship was stopped by Israeli naval forces on Wednesday in international waters while they were attempting to bring humanitarian aid to Gaza.
Governments throughout Europe called for Israeli embassies to denounce the film. France called for the release of all the inmates, Spain declared it would not put up with mistreatment of its citizens, and Italy requested an apology.
The film “violates the most basic standards of respect and dignity for people,” according to Britain’s foreign ministry, while Poland’s foreign minister demanded that Ben-Gvir be prohibited from entering the nation. Ben-Gvir, according to US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee, “betrayed (the) dignity of his nation.
