Trump Proposes Renaming the Strait of Hormuz as ‘Trump Strait

President Donald Trump proposed renaming the Strait of Hormuz the “Trump Strait” on Wednesday, reaffirming US authority over the key waterway despite ongoing hostilities with Iran. It is the latest in a series of geographical name changes proposed by Trump, and comes after he claimed US sovereignty over the strait, which Tehran has essentially closed for six months.

Now that it is under US authority, shall we rename it the Trump Strait? Like America, it would be ‘hotter’ than ever before!” Trump stated on his Truth Social platform. The White House later shared a map of the Gulf on social media, labelling the waterway “Trump Strait.” “It’s got a nice ring to it,” the White House added.

The 80-year-old president’s call to unilaterally rename an international body of water after himself comes as the six-month-old war with Iran shows no signs of ending. Since coming to office last year, Trump has made a series of similar rebranding recommendations that began as obvious attempts to tease his opponents but eventually became reality. Amid a trade conflict with neighbouring Canada, the 80-year-old Republican issued an order last week renaming Lake Ontario “Lake America”.
