In response to US President Donald Trump’s plan to expel Palestinians from the Gaza Strip and annex the region, Egypt has postponed an urgent Arab conference. According to a statement released by Egypt’s Foreign Ministry on Tuesday, the summit will take place in Cairo on March 4 to allow for further “logistical and objective preparations.”
Originally planned on February 27, the summit was called after Trump’s proposal shocked the region. Arab nations and Palestinians have unanimously opposed any eviction of the region’s inhabitants. The idea, which human rights organisations argued would amount to forced relocation in violation of international law, has been hailed by Israel.
Hamas announced Tuesday that it will free the final six Israeli detainees still alive as part of the initial round of a ceasefire agreement. According to two Egyptian security officials, President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi of Egypt is scheduled to visit Riyadh on Thursday to discuss an Arab plan for Gaza that might involve up to $20 billion from the region for rehabilitation. Arab nations are anticipated to talk on a post-conflict strategy for Gaza.
According to four people with knowledge of the situation, the Arab proposal will be reviewed and discussed in Riyadh by Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar before to its presentation at a planned Arab summit on March 4.
