According to Indian media on Monday, three Air India aircraft parked at Terminal 2 (T2) of Delhi International Airport suffered damage after adjoining ground support equipment was moved by strong winds and heavy rain and struck the aircraft.
The three narrow-body aircraft had to be taken out of service after the incident, according to Delhi International Airport Limited officials. Due to an unexpectedly severe wind and rain, three Air India aircraft were damaged when ground support equipment struck them while they were moving from their location. According to an airport official, the incident happened around 4:40 p.m.
The incident occurred on Sunday during heavy rain and strong winds that disrupted aircraft schedules and interfered with airport operations in the Indian capital.Before the abrupt worsening of the weather, neither the airport operator nor the airlines had received a weather warning from Air Traffic Control (ATC), according to an airport official.
All three damaged Air India aircraft have been grounded for inspection and repairs, although two are expected to return to service soon, according to an official with knowledge of the situation, who also stated that other airlines’ aircraft were affected by the extreme weather.
